Ever since the 1990’s, Dillard’s has ensured that many stores were purchased which includes Castner Knott, Bacon’s, Gayfers, glass Block, de Lendrecie’s, Maison Blanche, McAlpin’s, Root’s The Jones Store, Lion Store, Joslins, J.B. White and Hennessy’s. Later, there was a sale by Dillard’s outlet to May Department Store Co. This store was previously owned by Mercantile Stores. Then again, there was additional trade that was made by the company when they exchanged seven of their stores with Belk in exchange of nine.

In the year 2004, the part of Dillard’s outlet that handled operations related to credit card operations were given up, to the GE Money Bank. The change that was brought about was that customers would now get two credit cards, one issued by American Express and the other issued by Dillard’s. Also, these cards could be used to purchase anything and would be accepted in all stores that recognized American Express Bank. The travel agency owned by Dillard’s was shut down in the year 2008 and so was their in-store location which existed and operated in 43 stores out of the total of 318.

In 2008, due to the recession Dillard’s outlet shut shop at the mall located in Knoxville Center. Since then, the outlet has remained shut. However, stores are still expanding and they have begun opening outlets in shopping centers that are not malls. One of the largest stores owned by Dillard’s outlet is the store located at Scottsdale Fashion Square in Arizona. They also have stores located in Virginia, Park Plaza Mall, Austin, Texas, South Carolina and, Florida. Apart from these, about ten buildings in Florida were also acquired from Mervyns and a store in Houston, Texas was also taken over.

In the year 1960, a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma called Brown-Dunkin was taken over by Dillard’s and in the year 1963 another store by the name of Joseph Pfeifer was taken over. In the year 1964, a store called Gus Blass Co. was also acquired as a Dillard’s outlet. That year, the company went public by being listed in the American stock exchange. After this, there was a rapid growth in this chain of stores by acquiring many smaller stores and by helping many stores that were loss making firms.

The company would acquire these loss making companies and change them into profit making organizations. The organization grew by expanding and starting new malls that were built in small cities and towns. Beyond this time too, there were many take over’s that took place. Today there are a number of stores that are owned by the company all over the America, and one can take pride in their success mantra which has seen the company expand over time.
As a company, the Dillard’s outlet success story involves many situations where companies that were not performing well were taken over and converted to profit making organizations.

One such story is the takeover of Ivey’s chain of stores in the year 1990 and take-over of Gulf Coast stores in 1991. In the year 1992, Dillard’s outlet also completely took over five of the Ohio Stores which were already partly theirs. The next take over was in the year 1992, when 3 stores from the chain of stores by the name of Hess’s chain were targeted. The deal that happened in the year 1998 was sort of a culmination of all activities, and the deal was the takeover by Dillard’s outlet of Mercantile Stores Co. Inc.

Dillard’s is a part of the chain of Nashville stores that started in the year 1938 and the founder was William T. Dillard. The location of the corporate headquarters is in the Eastern edge of Rock’s Riverdale Area. When he founded Dillard’s outlet, most of the directors and executives were members of the Dillard family. Later on, the Nashville stores were sold in order to set up a larger store in Texarkana, Arkansas.

After the takeover, the company came to be known as Dillard’s Mayer & Schmidt. This was only till the year 1974 and later on it was renamed Dillard’s.

Recent recessionary patterns as we know, have hit most in a way one could have never imagined. The fallouts have been many, and certain aspects have gained a severity that’s hard to balance. It’s not difficult to understand that recession has forced people to rethink about spending every penny, but now even those precautions aren’t helping any more with unemployment here to stay.

The H.R. 4213 bill, amongst other things, holds policy laying parameters for unemployment extension. The Unemployment Extension, a US federal government program aimed at helping American states to offer unemployment benefits to those who’ve been given the pink slip without being at fault. The ongoing financial meltdown saw many a company shut shop, dwindle away to non-recognition, and file for bankruptcy amongst others. Many companies that survived, did so, by laying off staff. Most attributed the need to lay off workforce in order to reduce operation costs to deal with recession. Of course, gossip behind the scene suggests that some companies chose to lay off staff because the timing was right, but that’s another debate altogether.

Back to the need for an Unemployment Extension in the H.R. 4213 bill. Current Unemployment Extension provisions allow laid-off workers who aren’t able to find a job for an extensive time period to work their way through 4 additional tiers of extended benefits. This allows them to seek unemployment income for a maximum possible period until this benefit is withdrawn for an individual.

Up until the recession storm swooped in on the US, this seemed to work well and even cut out malpractices leading to false claims. However, the scenario has changed completely in a few short months. Earlier, unemployment income bore a distinct character. It was needed by those in the lower income group, unskilled labor, those who weren’t educated to get a permanent job, and many other individuals with a similar societal setup. All that has now been erased, and in addition to those who didn’t have jobs earlier, the urban population that at one time spoke about job stability has joined the unemployed wagon.
