Only about 5% of all beans come out in peaberry form and due to this rarity, peaberry coffee is often considered as the epitome of flavor. However, there are some who have a different opinion and discard all peaberries, as low quality produce.

The quality of the coffee beans apart from the plant’s species, also depends on the soil, the plant is grown in. Consequently the taste and texture of the coffee from different parts of the world varies greatly. Latin American coffee beans such as the Yuaco and Blue Mountain have a crisp, clear, coffee flavor, whereas the beans of the African continent (Kenyan, Matari) are flashier with fruity undertones. Asian brands like the infamous Java are rich and full-bodied. A few like the Indian Mysore and Hawaiian Kona are distinctive enough to be in a class of its own.

With such an array of flavor, it is only fair that the title of best coffee beans be left to the taste buds of the drinker. Tastes and likes, vary and so does the coffee, which the consumer considers best.

Coffee the world’s most popular stimulant is obtained exclusively from the stone seed, also called the bean of the coffee plant. Although there are well over 6000 species of the coffee plant all equipped with caffeinated beans, only two are extremely popular in the commercial arena – Cafea arabica that gives the arabica beans, and C. canophora which gives the robusta beans.

Arabica beans are favored in cafes and homes due to the heavier aroma and refined taste. This is despite the fact that they have almost half the caffeine content, and are more expensive to cultivate than robusta beans. Robusta beans are more bitter than arabicas and at times come with the aroma of burning rubber.

A third type of coffee bean is the peaberry, which is actually a deformation defect of the coffee plant. Each arabica and robusta bean has two halves, which in certain stressed plants fuse to form a round bean called the peaberry.
